Education and Training for Sustainability
The time for change
has come. The keyword today is sustainability and balancing its
three pillars – economic, environmental and social – is the
challenge of our times. The prerequisite for meeting the
sustainability challenge is undoubtedly the development of human
capital that is able to adapt and respond to the evolving needs
of our society, the natural environment and the unfolding
economic crisis around the world.
Having recognized the emerging needs, more and more educational institutions are striving to embed sustainability in their operations and in their academic programs. The number of those institutions ready to incorporate sustainability in their curricula, courses and teaching materials is growing fast.
Moreover, the global call to action for mainstreaming sustainability across the education system is getting louder and more powerful.
At the same time, the markets and regulatory requirements are forcing industry to adapt a more responsible way of doing business. As a result, the demand for green human capital is continuously growing. The energy challenges and the depletion of scarce and finite natural resources are further boosting the demand for green human capital across the globe.
In short, the education and training that is based on the principles of sustainability is not a choice but the only option.
For past over seven years, EOSD has been playing a key role in stimulating debate on investing in human capital development for sustainable economy, designing capacity building programs to address the emerging needs of businesses and society, bringing stakeholders together to share best practices and support public institutions, trade associations and other major players to launch initiatives that help prepare human capital for creating a greener and a more sustainable world.
A number of academic institutions are also strategic partners of EOSD in reshaping education to meet the challenges of 21st century.
